About This Place

Nestled along the bustling Kamehameha Highway in Aiea, Waimalu Chop Suey offers an authentic taste of classic Chinese-Hawaiian cuisine that locals and visitors alike have cherished for years. This unpretentious restaurant prides itself on delivering hearty, richly flavored dishes that bring comfort and nostalgia with every bite. Whether you’re craving a familiar favorite or eager to explore new flavors, Waimalu Chop Suey consistently impresses with both its quality and generous portions.

The menu reads like a celebration of traditional fare elevated with skillful preparation and bold flavors. Highlights include the tender Steamed Fish Fillet with Ginger & Onion Sauce, which melds delicate, flaky fish with the warm, aromatic punch of ginger and sweet onions. The Oyster Rolls with Crispy Wun Ton are a standout, delivering a satisfyingly crunchy exterior that gives way to savory fillings, perfect for sharing. Fans of robust, spiced dishes rave about the Singapore Rice Noodles Spicy, a dish bursting with vibrant heat and balanced seasoning.

Comfort classics such as Beef Broccoli Soft Wun Ton Mein and the crave-worthy Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp offer layers of texture and flavor — the former with tender beef and fresh broccoli coating silky wonton noodles, and the latter with a tantalizing honey glaze that clings to plump shrimp and crunchy walnuts. The Special House Plates present a little bit of everything, like the Beef Broccoli Chow Mein paired with pot roast pork and sweet & sour spareribs, making for a satisfying feast that invites you to savor the diversity of Chinese-influenced island cooking.

Despite its “hole-in-the-wall” charm and modest decor, Waimalu Chop Suey’s dining atmosphere is warm and unpretentious. Booths and round tables accommodate both intimate dinners and larger groups, reinforcing the sense of community around the table. Reviewers appreciate that the food arrives steaming hot and ready to enjoy, with attentive staff who strike the right balance between helpfulness and giving guests space to relax and savor their meals.

What truly stands out is the genuine satisfaction repeated visitors express. Daniel Walker praises the consistently juicy meats and solid value, calling it a “solid 5 of 5 for food quantity, richness, and taste.” Longtime patron Jus Me Jess fondly recalls childhood visits and recently indulged in the whole duck with bao buns—a dish that did not disappoint. Even those noting minor imperfections, like a worn interior or average service during busy times, acknowledge that the food here “slaps” and keeps them coming back.

Waimalu Chop Suey is more than just a stop for a meal; it’s a flavorful journey through cherished island-style Chinese fare served with warmth and authenticity. It’s a place where you can dive into a plate of crispy roast pork, savor garlic butter shrimp, or relish a cooling Cold Ginger Chicken that feels like a hug on a plate. With approachable prices and heartfelt dishes, it’s easy to see why this gem remains a beloved staple in the Aiea dining scene.

If you’re in the area and seeking a genuine, soul-satisfying meal that melds tradition with island flair, Waimalu Chop Suey is a destination you won’t want to miss.

Order comes out fast. Food was delicious. Meat was juicy not dry. Waiting Staff comes assists initially and leaves you be while you enjoy your food. Prices are solid not overly pricey for a majority of the items. It's my 6th or 7th time there. I have a good body of tasting to come out and say a solid 5 of 5 for food quantity, richness, and taste.

I used to come here as a kid with my family. Cold ginger chicken is my fave. Tried the whole duck with bao buns for the first time and it was delicious!! This place has been here for a minute. Bathroom isn't that great but you go there to eat and eat we did!!

The food we ordered was served hot and was tasty. For a light dinner we ordered Plain Rice Soup (jook) and Crispy Gau Gee with Vegetables. The later came with six pieces of filled-to-the-max tasty Gau Gee (not grisly or fatty), and we got full after eating only two each. Then we spooned the Vegetables and gravy into the Rice Soup for flavor (no need shoyu) Great value for our money. Service was decent especially since there was a large group event that night (approx. 6-7 tables), and also conversation was noisy from that group. Mahalo for a hot satisfying meal!

Giant Gau Gee with tasty pork hash filling. Ono Rice cake. Sells it early. My favorite dish is Beef with sweet sour cabbage over cake noodle. Prices are reasonable. Booth seating and Round table seating for larger groups. The service was average due to multiple customers.

Typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant the inside’s a little run down, could use some work lol. But the food slaps. We got the boneless minute chicken with cake noodle, honey walnut shrimp, crispy chicken with shoyu ginger, lup cheong fried rice, beef with sweet sour cabbage, and beef with eggplant. Everything was on point, except the eggplant, that one was just alright compared to the rest. Little tip we figured out: if you’re dining with a group (we had five), instead of ordering a bunch of bowls of rice, you might as well just get a fried rice. It’s around the same price and comes with a healthy amount, maybe not more, but definitely enough to go around, and tastes way better. Lup cheong fried rice is solid. Service was actually good for a Chinese spot, no complaints there. A/C could be stronger, but nothing too bad. Would come back for sure when the craving hits.

my brother & sister-in- law were in town for the day from Big Island. he wanted to go back to Waimalu for the jumbo crispy gau gee. he'd ordered it to take home last time he was here for work. today he ordered his favorite ~ oyster sauce w/ cake noodle & the steamed pork hash. we also had beef w/ sweet sour cabbage and s/s spareribs. oyster sauce chicken was good - big pieces of tender , bite size pieces of cake noodle & choy sum. sweet sour cabbage itself was ono w/ tender pieces of beef. pork hash was ok. piece of s/s spareribs i had was chewy. they went home with the LOs + another order of jumbo crispy gau gee & roast pork which he'd also taken home last time
